You must have heard about Facebook Messenger Bots or any other Chat Bots by now and you must also have questions. The main one probably being, do I need one for my business or is this just yet another techie buzzword I can ignore?
Well, here are some answers for you, so read on.
What’s a Messenger Bot?
A Facebook Messenger Bot is an automatic way to chat with people when they message your Facebook business page. A bot can answer questions, send push notifications, sell products, tell stories, jokes, and much, much more. It’s a new and fantastic way to engage your audience and nurture prospects.
Why should I create a Bot?
There are 1.2 billion people sending 2 billion messages a month on Messenger. Yes, you read that right. It’s expressed in billions!
You can send your followers push notifications that automatically pop up on their phones, just like Messenger alerts do. You can use this to talk to them, send them announcements, content, and more.
As you can reach people in real-time, creating an audience on Messenger is way more powerful than your email list or any of your other social media channels.
Everyone is going to do this, but those who start early have a better chance of rapid growth.
These are some of the known businesses and famous people who successfully use bots:
- Tommy Hilfiger
- American Express
- Western Union
- Wells Fargo
- Maroon 5
And bots are not just for big companies or mega bands. SMEs can do bots as well.
And there’s more.
Facebook just announced Messenger 2.0 at their F8 Conference, which has even more features to keep people engaged and within the platform. One such thing is Discover, which allows people to browse and find the best bots, places and businesses within Messenger.
So that’s why now is the time!
What can my bot do for my clients?
- Your bot can answer FAQs 24 hours, every day.
- Your bot can send push notifications to your audience instantly with your latest blog post, an ebook, a new product launch.
- Your bot can alert them in real time of any event, even minutes before it starts, like a discount sale, a pop-up shop, tickets going on sale, a concert or conference announcement, etc.
- Your bot can learn based on what people said to it that it didn’t understand.
- And if your bot gets stuck, it can alert a human to carry on with the conversation.
How can I create a Bot?
There are a few services that make creating a bot easy and fun, by just following natural language conversations. These services help you connect to your Facebook business page and create a welcome message as well as sequences you can subscribe your followers to.

How do I get followers on Messenger?
Simple; create great content and distribute it, then ask people to follow your bot.
On Messenger you would create conversations, pre-written by you, between your bot and your audience.
Your audience starts by opting in using a button that says “Get Started” (they can easily opt out by typing “Stop” or “Unsubscribe”).
Then your bot says something, your audience responds by tapping a button, and then your bot responds, and so on and so forth.
These chats can be as long or as short as you want and you can have as many as you want too.
They can be about whatever suits your business persona. You can share them via push notifications or using a special link on social media, your blog, email, etc.
To promote your bot you should start by changing the button on your Facebook business page to “Send Message”, add a button on your website that links to your bot, share a video about your bot on social media.
So to answer the question at the top… Yes, your business does need a Messenger Bot, and now you know why.
Remember, this is going to explode soon so better get on board now.
